ENTER DRAGONLAND

The debut of the three day outdoor Dragonland Music Festival in Central at the end of February attracted what organizers claim was 40,000 people (though observers believe it was less). Cantopop king Leon Lai performed on the first night while such EDM acts as Steve Aoki, Zedd and Infected Mushroom moved the crowd during the chilly second night. For the festival finale, a pop lineup including Black Eyed Peas, Iggy Azalea (who reportedly also took time out to film a video at a club in Lan Kwai Fong), Cary Rae Jepsen and Mike Posner thrilled audiences.

Promoter Alvin Wang claims that he not only wants Dragonland to be an annual event, but aims to travel regionally with the festival beginning next year. “I wanted to build a brand and at least, in the second year, have a chance to work with a China partner in a Chinese city,” says Wang. “We would do it in the same weekend with the same group of artists.”

Wang also has clear dreams when it comes to bringing future Dragonland headliners to Hong Kong. “We’ll need more of a budget and more sponsors, but I want to have Ariana Grande and Eminem,” he says.
