No stranger to shock value, Damien Hirst’s body of work is now on display for HK art lovers and the morbidly curious. The Gagosian presents “Visual Candy and Natural History,” a selection of paintings and sculptures by Hirst from the early- to mid-1990s. Famously credited for placing dismembered creatures in tanks of formaldehyde, Damien Hirst intends for his viewers to consider society’s attitude to death, and the relationship between man and animals.
Since blowing up on the international art scene in the late
80s, he became a protagonist for a generation of British artists. Through all his various installations, sculptures, paintings and drawings, he examines the complex links between art, beauty, religion, science, life and death. The incredibly diverse series now on show in Central places joyful explorations of colour beside clinical forms suspended in liquid, an eerie experience to say the least.
