HONG KONG’S AWARD WINNING BEER
Hard to believe, but there was a time when people wondered where to get good beer in Hong Kong.
Once good beer started to be imported, the next question was when the city would make standout beer.
Amidst the fairly recent launch of several breweries in our city, now comes an award winning beer. That honor goes to the Hong Kong Beer Company, the microbrewery that started it all, who picked up four medals at the Australian International Beer Awards earlier this month. With over 2,000 entries from 358 breweries and 36 countries, it’s hailed as the largest beer competition in the world.
“Hong Kong Beer Company is thrilled to have won four medals at the AIBA,” HKBC Director Devin Kimble said to Home Kong. “It is also great to see other Asian breweries on the lists, showing that the beer world just keeps getting bigger and the quality better. We are very happy to be a part of that ever upward trend.”
The Hong Kong Beer Company was given a silver award for its HK Amber Ale and three bronze awards for its Dragon’s Back Pale Ale, Big Wave Bay IPA and Sevens Stout. While it’s won various awards in the past, the latest is sure to call increased attention to their entire range.
The 22 year old Chai Wan based operation currently makes seven year round and seasonal varieties, and additional draft variations to the tune of 5,000 barrels a year.
They’ve also just collaborated with Kowloon Bay Brewery and Black Kite Brewery in making a special spicy wheat beer called Wei(zen) of Dragon. Just two kegs were made of the craft beer, which will be on tap (until it’s all gone) at The Oak Crafted (Store F, 223 Tung Choi Street, Prince Edward, Kowloon) starting at 6pm on May 29th.
